Le mot ʻauana signifie errer ou dériver, et les enseignants de la culture hawaïenne décrivent le ʻauana comme le hula qui s'est éloigné de ses anciennes racines rituelles : des danses façonnées par des chansons, des idées et des instruments arrivés après les premiers contacts avec les Européens, en 1778. Il s'est développé au cours des années 1800, à l'époque du roi Kalākaua, puis a été distingué comme une catégorie à part entière, aux côtés du hula kahiko (le hula ancien).
Ce qui distingue le plus les deux styles, c'est la musique. Le kahiko se danse au son du chant et de la percussion — des tambours comme le pahu et des calebasses comme l'ipu. Le ʻauana s'accompagne de mele mélodiques et chantés (des chansons hawaïennes), portés par des instruments à cordes comme le ʻukulele et la guitare, arrivés à Hawaï avec les contacts occidentaux. Les deux styles racontent leurs histoires par les mains de la danseuse ou du danseur; ce qu'un néophyte remarque d'abord, c'est une mélodie chantée là où le kahiko est scandé.
Comme tout hula, le ʻauana s'enseigne au sein d'un hālau (une école de hula), sous la direction d'un kumu hula, c'est-à-dire un maître ou une enseignante. Comme le dit la ressource Kahoʻiwai de l'Université d'Hawaï, la personne qui danse et celle qui joue de la musique font également partie de l'art : « the joy of the dance is made so because of both the dancer and the musician » (la joie de la danse tient à la fois au danseur et au musicien).
Pour qui découvre le hula, le ʻauana est une porte d'entrée accessible. Ses chansons mélodiques et ses instruments familiers sont faciles à apprécier, et de nombreuses écoles offrent des cours pour débutants ouverts aux personnes sans aucune expérience. Un premier cours s'en tient généralement aux bases : le travail des pieds, les gestes des mains qui portent le sens d'une chanson, et l'apprentissage d'une danse une phrase à la fois. Les pas et leurs noms, les paroles des mele et l'histoire derrière chaque danse viennent avec le temps, transmis par votre kumu.
