Privacy policy
Last updated: June 2026
halau.ca is a community project of AlohaFest Toronto. This policy explains what personal information we handle and your choices. It applies in addition to applicable privacy law, including Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (Law 25).
Privacy officer
Questions or requests can be sent to our privacy officer at privacy@halau.ca.
What we collect
- Listing and event submissions. When you submit a listing, claim, or event, the contact details you provide (your name and email) are emailed to our curator for verification only. They are not stored in our public content system and are not published.
- Usage analytics. We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how the site is used (pages viewed, clicks, general region). For visitors outside Quebec this runs by default; for Quebec visitors it runs only with your consent (see below).
- Approximate location. To know whether to ask Quebec visitors for consent, your IP address is checked against an IP-geolocation service to estimate your province. We do not store your IP address for this purpose.
- Advertising. We may display ads via Google AdSense. Ads always display; for visitors who decline tracking, ads are served on a non-personalized basis.
Cookies and tracking
Microsoft Clarity and advertising may set cookies. Quebec visitors are shown a consent banner and can accept or decline tracking; declining keeps the site and ads working, just without tracking. You can change your choice at any time using the “Privacy choices” control at the bottom of the page.
Third parties
We share data with service providers only as needed to run the site: Microsoft (Clarity analytics), Google (AdSense), and an IP-geolocation provider. These providers may process data outside Quebec. We do not sell personal information.
Retention
Submission emails are kept by the curator only as long as needed to review and verify a listing. Analytics data is retained per the providers' standard retention periods.
Your rights
You may request access to, or correction of, personal information we hold about you, and you may withdraw consent to tracking at any time. To exercise these rights, contact our privacy officer above. If you are in Quebec and are not satisfied with our response, you may file a complaint with the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec (CAI).
